Some Place Warm

It's been another few days of cold. Temperature dropped to minus 30 overnite. The high today is a balmy -20 C. However, the sun is shining and the blue sky looks great. It is supposed to warm up over the next few days and no snow in the forecast so who can really complain.

I am busy trying to find some 'deals' on the internet to go to someplace warm. My best pick will be Hawaii and I have a few deals on the line so will book something soon. Don't want to lose them, now that I have found something.

However, I am always unsure of timing. It seems like something always comes up and you wonder if you should go. But, once I am there, I hardly think of anything back home! So far the only thing we are concerned with is that it has to be AFTER John's mom's 102nd birthday. Can't miss that. She has spent a lot of time trying to 'get there' so we want to celebrate that with her!

Our granddaughter's 1st birthday tomorrow! Feb. 1st. One year old. Hard to believe the time has gone by so fast. Weren't we just there celebrating the Olympics?! and her birth! Time is moving too fast. Need to spend a little more of it appreciating every moment.

Too Soon the End

Well, last night was the last night of our Prayer Works. A great worship time and then they brought the kids in and they all sat on the platform. About 30 kids. The children's pastor asked them if they would like to pray for the adults and asked them to put their hand up if they had a prayer.  It was pretty powerful - some of the prayers - cute, and what you might expect from 5 or 6 year olds. One little girl, said she was praying for her parents who don't know Jesus and are going through a divorce. A few 'sighs' slipped out unexpectedly. Some prayed for people to have what they wanted (meant in the most spiritual way I'm sure), some for the children to have food and shelter in Haiti, and the one that for some reason stood out in my mind was that we would be 'reasonable' with each other. Out of the mouths of babes, eh?!

After they left for their own program in the gym which by the way was supposed to be fantastic. It was a 'camp out' evening with tents set up, a real fire (not sure how they did that) and stars in the sky (they had a special light in the ceiling which caused tiny holes to shine tiny lights as stars - unbelievably real!).

Anyway, we continued with four 'prayer stations' at the front of the church. At the first one, someone was assigned to lead prayer for our church (and other churches) and our ministries, the pastors, their families, etc. Another 'station' was for 'Newcomers to Canada', all that they must learn, encouagement to be good Canadians and opportunities to learn about Jesus; a third was for children, schools, young people for protection of their minds, etc. and the fourth (I think) for Service Industry, police, fire etc. for care and protection and the laws (and lawmakers) that govern us. We were asked to come to the front and chose one of the four to 'stand up for' and pray. The leader first led us in prayer in each group and then we were free to pray as we were inclined within the group.  It was a pretty amazing prayertime.

After that our MLA, Mike Lake, came to the platform with his wife, Debbie, and had been asked to share what he felt we could pray for gov't leaders (himself included). He outlined the Lord's Prayer and shared a little of how he prayed. The Pastor then asked the Board members to come and they all prayed for Mike/Debbie and our gov't, led by the pastor. It was a great visual as the Canada flag and the Provincial flag were 'front and center' and they prayed beside it.

Then WE were asked to pray. We could come to the front for a specific prayer request as there would be some people there to pray with them. We could gather into groups of 4-6 in the pew where we were, or pray just with the person beside us - or if we did not like to pray out loud at all, we can lower our head and pray silently ourselves. Many options and all were taken!

I had been seated beside someone I normally don't sit with and the three women in front of me I didn't even know, yet when we prayed for each other, we became 'soul sisters'. It was very moving. We are looking for a dramatic healing in one. We know our God CAN and if not, we pray, she has the strength to walk the path given her. We enveloped her with courage, patience and peace. We will continue to pray for her now that we know of her circumstance. It is amazing what God can do.

It was over too soon. It's unfortunate that we can't do that regularly and yet, you can't maintain those highs. But it's how we handle the low's where the highs have their great impact.

Reading the bible this morning I was drawn to this verse. I believe it encapsulates the overall message I received this past week. I hope this will strengthen your faith as well.

Psalm 73:23-26.
Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

A New Look at The Lord's Prayer

I took a picture of the Cross which was in one of the Prayer rooms on Monday night. I mentioned yesterday that people could go into it and pray and leave a note pinned to the cross with a burden or concern that they needed to 'let go'. Last night, they had brought the cross and placed it on the platform. At first I couldn't figure it out. All these little white 'thingamajigs' on it! Then it hit me! They were the "burdens in print"! It was pretty powerful to me. Maybe you 'had to be there' to appreciate it as it may not 'hit you' when you see the picture as much as when you are there in person.

A few burdens laid down ...

Anyway, last night was another great night. More like a Sunday service in some ways as the pastor was sharing on how he does prayer. We were looking at The Lord's Prayer. A printed sheet was handed out to everyone and it was basically an 'instruction' sheet on how to expand on the prayer. Each line was highlighted and information was shared on how he expanded the prayer to include family, personal situations, others' concerns and appreciation for who God is, what he does in our lives (both what we see and don't see) and our requests and thanks. Of course, it was a lot more involved than that but you can always go to the website to find out more!

Last night had about the same number of people - maybe a few less - but that doesn't seem to be odd as many don't show up during the middle of the week 'for church'. Their loss I think as it was definitely an instructive evening.  You can never hear too many times how you can improve your connection with God - how important it is to have communication with Him and ways and opportunities to feel His presence.

The pastor left about 17 minutes for each of us to individually and privately go over the Lord's Prayer in our hearts and minds and to pray as he had shared concerning each line.  I can't believe how fast that time went. I had not finished going over the points in my head and sharing my heart in the way he had outlined, when he called us back together again.  I hope I can do as well in my own private times! I often get distracted 'in my head' and physically as well, with phone calls, the washer buzzing, the phone ringing or whatever else needs to be done in a day!

We have one more night of Prayer Works. I am looking forward to seeing what the evening will be like. I know I should be thinking more 'spiritual' about the evening but it's providing me with a very creative look at 'church' and connecting with an all powerful God. Anything that helps me move forward in my walk with Him I get excited about.  Church is more than just the building - it's the people I worship with, the day to day life I lead, and how I handle it. Connecting with 'the living God' is pretty important, wouldn't you say?

Anyway...2011 is here and the end of the first month of it is just around the corner. I will again try to live my life as well as I can and be the best that I can be. Hopefully, you will excuse any 'slights' I may give you unknowingly. I am still a work in progress.  According to point #4 in the pastor's sheet he handed out on the Lord's Prayer...Forgive us our sins, just as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us...I add the scripture verse Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God, for Christ's sake hath forgiven you (King James version)!

Interactive Prayer Stations

I feel like I am one day behind on everything as I had to work yesterday and today. I am headed off to the Prayer Works event tonite but here's what took place last night.

Our church is fairly large, so they had provided a map with room numbers and locations for 11 rooms dedicated to different venues of prayer. Once we all were settled in the auditorium to start, the pastor shared what would take place during the evening and then we were free to choose where we wished to go. (I had already been asked to help out in the Prayer Room for those who would come to ask for prayer - something like our Sunday morning ministry time - so I was already committed.) I would have liked the opportunity to visit the different rooms but feel I was able to provide an essential service to many people for the evening. We were asked to return to the main auditorium at about 8:10 to complete the evening with some comments and prayer.

The main auditorium has three large projector screens and they were showing different scripture verses. If you remained in here, you were asked to meditate and pray about these specific scriptures. It was a very quiet and relaxed atmosphere. In the Cafe (where I was) there was a ministry team from Stephen Ministries who were there to pray for concerns and needs. The lights were low, we had some music playing softly and we had tables with 4 chairs to accommodate 9 prayer 'stations' comfortably. It was busy the entire evening with people waiting at different times for an opening.

One of the rooms was for prayer for the nations of the world. It listed all of our global missionary efforts with the names and pictures of those we support. There was opportunity to pray here and leave a message of encouragement as well.

The Fireside Room was used as a prayer room with music and song for those who enjoyed singing choruses and hymns. Another room was called 'stories of answered prayer' room. It was filled with over 150 sheets of paper telling individual's stories about answered prayer from people in our church. That was interesting and goose bumpy! You could also walk through the office area and the pastors offices and pray for them (he encouraged everyone to do that) and upstairs there was a Communion Room for those wanting to do so. One room had a number of directories of our members and we were asked to pray for whoever we felt led to - say 10 families at random - or anyone specific we chose. Another room had a Cross in it and there were pieces of paper for you to write down something you needed to 'leave at the cross' eg. burdens of some sort. Another room was filled with candles where you could light a candle in memory of someone or simply say a prayer for someone. The last room was for you to write a note about 'what prayer means to you'.

The whole evening was very moving. There were only about 500 people there walking about softly talking, many praying, seated in the foyer and different rooms. It was very encouraging and uplifting and soul provoking - if you get my meaning!

Anyway, looking forward to what is on tonite. Not sure what the outline is but I am sure it will be interesting!

Again...prayer works!

Prayer Works Multi-Generational

Continuing on with our week of prayer...
Last night we went to the Young Adults program at our church at 7 pm. It was combined with the two morning services population to share about 'Prayer'. What a great night! I am sure some of the 'usual' attendees of the YA did not attend simply because there were going to be 'older' people there but I think those that did attend, appreciated all that happened. All in all, about 700+ were there to share this experience.

Without all the detail, one of the best parts of the evening (I thought) was when Pastor Phil talked about the fact that the evening was "multi-generational" and that we can learn and support each other. He shared what he would like us to do and just let us do it.  He pointed out there were little sheets of paper in the pew in front of us and asked us if we would write down a problem or concern we might be dealing with right now that would be helpful if prayer were added to it. Then he wanted us to bring it to the front and lay it down on the alter and he hoped that if it were a YA that left it there, that a 'mature older adult' would come to pick it up and agree to pray for that concern. It started with exactly that.

After a short moment of silence and no movement anywhere...a young adult took his request to the front, placed it on the steps and returned to his seat. Another moment of silence...5 seconds...10 seconds...and then...a mature adult went to the front and picked it up. A trickle started. Another YA, and someone went to pick it up, then there was an older person who lay down a paper and a YA came to pick it up.  It kept going like that and getting busier and busier. The aisles became full of people - coming and going - like ants - some marching down the aisle to the front while others were returning back to their seats with a paper in hand. It was truly amazing. There were goosebumps on my goosebumps!

You cannot believe the feeling - the excitment in the air - it truly was amazing. A body of believers who were really feeling and caring about each other.

If you want to hear more about the Concert of prayer and what Pastor Gary had to share in the morning, check out the website, audio message for Jan.23 either Change Point 1 (which I attend) or Change Point 2. Both were amazing!

But wait till you hear what happened tonite at the Prayer Works service!

Prayer Really Works

I think I mentioned Prayer Works in my blogs before but this week we started our Faith Enrichment Days (a week in January) with this specific title. I fully endorse it. I like the name.

We had 11 video clips this morning of people willing to share something on 'answered prayer' in their lives. An additional two people stood up front with the Pastor to share 'in person' (not on video) about their specific answer to prayer.

As Pastory Gary said, any skeptics in the audience may not be 'won over' by these testimonies. If you are a skeptic, you may stay as one. But, for believers, these were statements that only served to encourage and affirm our own belief in a God that answers prayer.

Some pretty amazing stories that so often go untold except to immediate family members who are involved in the specific situation or friends called on to pray. A few weeks ago the Pastor asked if there were people in the congregation who would be willing to write down on paper a short version of an answered prayer and to hand it in and the church would compile them into a book or 'something'. It was amazing to see the number of responses to this request.

This morning the ushers handed out to everyone who passed through the doors, a little printed book of 'answered prayers' compiled from the many submitted that Sunday a few weeks ago. This coming week we all will have opportunity to read the other stories that had been written down and handed in. We are having a week (well, actually it is only four evenings but we call it Prayer Week) of evening church meetings focused on prayer. Now, that might sound pretty boring to you but in fact, it is actually quite exciting. Our church tends to lean to the 'conservative side' but it never holds back on creativity! It will not be boring in any sense of the word.

Exciting Ride

Well, we are back in Edmonton again. It was kind of hard to leave the clear pavement and green grass even if it was raining off and on. However, even with all the snow, it is beautiful here. +1 with blue sky and sunshine. The snow just makes everything look clean (except the roads which are slush and sand, and yuk)!

Clear pavement - no snow in Vancouver

Pulled over by the siren & flashing lights

Interesting trip home from the airport. Our taxi got pulled over for dangerous driving as he sped past a patrol car which was sitting on the side of the road investigating a car in the ditch. He was on our tail pretty fast. You have to slow down to 60 when passing a stopped patrol car. I need to check out that exact speed but we think it is 60, not 50.

I took this picture through the back window of the cab. Pretty dirty. Anyway, we are home now. The driver still charged us the regular fare but offered an apology.

We had a good time with the kids and I even got a few good videos of them. I wish I could figure out how to download them but that has not happened yet. I will keep trying. In the meantime I figured out how to do black and white on my camera so here is our little angel!

Am I cute or what?
Anyway, back into routine.  It already feels like we never went anywhere!

Hippy Days Craze

I mentioned yesterday about the snow but forgot to mention that it was 'hippy day' at school as well. The two older kids were supposed to dress in 'hippy style'. Remember what that was like? hair bands, vests, long broomstick skirts, floral, patched jeans.  Need I go on?  Anyway, Alicia had a blue t-shirt which had the peace sign on it and decided to throw on a number of her coloured beaded necklaces. She looked cute. We had a headband for her (a long scarf) but she chose not to wear it. Josh took one of his white t-shirts, turned it inside out and drew on it with washable ink - the peace sign, words of love, etc. He opted for the headband and felt 'with it'.

It is hard to believe that the kids are growing up (so fast). I remember being in Grade 5 especially (which he is) and all the feelings and emotions that went with it. Strange that I don't recall Grade 4 much though. Grade 2 was a good year but I guess Grade 3 was in transition or something because I don't recall it at all!  Could be that my mom cut my long hair into a short bob and fashioned bangs where before I had none, just before we moved out west to Alberta from Ontario. Grade 4, I started in a new school with new 'soon-to-be friends' in a totally different city & province. Life in the Air Force was always in transition But that's another story.

Anyway, here are a few pics of the 'other kids' in their outfits.

Snack Time

Another picture, Gramma?

Snow...what's new?

It's Thursday and we woke up to it snowing this morning. At first, we thought we were back in Edmonton as it is coming down very heavy. Looks beautiful but...  Grace got a chance to try on her new snowsuit which she looks so cute in but it makes it hard to move. So far she likes it. We'll see what it feels like strapped into her car seat!

It is supposed to turn into rain this afternoon. Of course the kids are disappointed as they wanted to 'play' in the snow. Hopefully it will still be there at recess! Oh, those were the days, eh?

I think we are just getting prepared for Edmonton with the snow there and a small reminder of things to come!

Snow on the bbq

New pink snowsuit - how appropriate!

So cute

We have arrived safe and sound in Vancouver and of course, the days seem to be totally occupied with the grandkids. For me, the day goes by so quickly. On Sunday, our flite was delayed 2 hours with mechanical difficulties (that always makes me nervous) so by the time we got to our destination the kids were getting ready for bed. They ended up going to bed quite late too (oops!) but we enjoyed playing with them for awhile.

Monday we walked over to the school with the youngest at noon as he had been feeling sick in the morning and did not want to go. He was fine after everyone left so we let him stay home and play and then walked with him to school at noon. He seemed happy with that. He had alone time with his grandparents!  On our return home, we stopped in to have soup at the local chinese restaurant. Grace slept through lunch!

Today it was raining in the morning but the sun has come out. We have only one hour before we have to head over to pick up the kids from school. Where did the day go? Grampa made bacon & eggs &  pancakes this morning for 'breakie' so everyone seemed happy.

Happy Girl!
Gracie is a doll. She is not walking or crawling but 'scooting' which I hope you can appreciate via this video clip if it works. Anyway, enjoying our time - rain or shine!  Guess the video doesn't work so you just have to enjoy the picture. I will keep trying to get the video to work but no guarantees.

An Encouraging Word

I awoke this morning with indecision on my mind.  It was 7:05 and I heard the door shut. I know that John was going outside to shovel snow. Should I lie there and try to go back to sleep? or should I get up and get ready to go to Weight Watchers?

I met a lady last week at church who was new and we got to talking - strangely enough about Weight Watchers. I said I used to go and met my goal but since then (a few years ago) I have climbed up a bit. No, not rock climbing, nor mountain climbing, nor hiking. No...none of those things. I have climbed up in weight again!!!

So, we made a deal to meet on Sat morning at Weight Watchers. Is it coincidental that we both go to the same location near my house at the same time on the same day? Saturday! How coincidental is that?  I have been talking to myself for the past few months and lecturing myself on returning to WW so that I would have some accountability - other than myself!

So, there I am, lying in bed, and encouraging myself to 'get out of bed' and 'go' to the agreed on appointment.  Now, I know that if I didn't go, she would not be mad at me, nor likely would she really care. She was going with her friend that she always goes with and has coffee there before they weigh in.  So whether I go or not does not mean a lot to her.  BUT I know it will mean a lot to me. So, I got up, got ready and away I went.  Saturday morning at 8:25 a.m. I am out the door into the cold and snow! I guess that shows some determination!

On arriving, there were lots of ladies there already. I got signed up (again) and paid my dues (again) and bought a calculator (again). Although I am a Lifetime Member, I still have to pay as my goal weight (haha) is not where I am now. I sat by myself trying to read all the information package ahead of time and my new acquaintance was not there yet.  I sat beside a woman, Pauline, who said I looked familiar to her.  (Perhaps we knew each other 4 years ago when we were both lighter! )  Anyway, we seemed to click.  I spotted my other friend come in with her friend and sit at the far side of the hall so never got a chance to talk to her until after the meeting.  I did meet three other ladies that go to my church and that I know quite well. So...I am feeling encouraged. I am not alone in this 'weight' battle. We are all about the same age so it should be interesting, challenging and encouraging for each of us to meet our goals.

Now my effort is into reading the books, setting up my calculator and 'sticking to the plan'.  It appears they have a NEW program called PointsPlus.  They tell you to forget about the old program and just work with this new one.  That won't be hard for me as OBVIOUSLY I have already forgotten about the old way which is why I am back!!

I may not share a lot about this battle, but suffice it to say that I am not alone. If you are in the same boat (or ship), don't jump yet! Hang in there. We can do this!

On a light-hearted note, I was reading in my bible this morning after returning from WW, the following verse which I have now taken as an assurance that I am not alone but that HE is with me.  Psalm 18:17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me.

For me, this is definitely a reference to my 'enemy', the desire for cookies, nibblies and all those other 'not so good for me' items. I am taking this as my scripture verse for the next 12 weeks.

A Matter of Trust

It's funny how things 'come together'. Got you interested? Well, here goes.

I was meeting with a new friend yesterday over coffee. She was sharing that a few things were not going as planned in her life.  It had been good and she was faithfully trusting God to 'work in her favor'.  Well, things don't always go as you plan.

An unexpected phone call left her feeling anxious, upset and wondering to herself 'where is God in all of this?'  Interesting how our perspective changes about God when he is not conducting things in a manner we would expect. Isn't there a book called 'Great Expectation'? I wonder if the main character in it also found things don't work as you plan?

Anyway, in a parallel world of mine, our life group is studying on prayer and how God's response to our prayers do not necessarily take the shape of our requests.  A few personal stories of how God did 'more than expected or asked for' and some stories of the 'bunny trails' they were sent on with questions in their mind and yet, at the 'finish line', they were dumbfounded as to what had taken place and how much better for everyone it turned out to be than the original prayer request!

I say all of that to encourage those of you (and me) who either have 'unanswered' prayers or are in the 'wait and trust' mode of their prayer request. God does not leave you 'high and dry' even though you feel like you are flailing on the beach (great visual eh?). He is right there all the time encouraging (check out the people around you), leading (keep your eyes open for unexpected opportunities) and caring (expose yourself to reading his Word which offers all three - comfort, caring, encouragement and four...direction.)  It's usually US that heads the wrong way - MY way - not HIS way.

Anyway, after some discussion about His faithfulness to her in the past and the faith and trust we are called to have when going through something and asking for His help, we emerged at the other side with all of these things, plus 'great expectations' of just what and how He was going to bring it all together 'for her good'.  I was reminded of Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord. "Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

That all being said, we agreed that the walk we are on is sometimes not the one we choose but we can continue it because we know He is walking with us. Of course, that leads me right into the FOOTPRINTS prayer which is my testimony - but that's another story - for another time. God bless each and every one of you as you wait 'patiently' and 'expectantly' for your answers.

Dreary Day

Well, I made it over the Yellowhead up to 137 Avenue. That is a long way with snow and falling snow and slow traffic. Actually, I was early by 1/2 hour so I went to the Tim's right beside the salon and had a medium coffee (1 and 1) and a chicken wrap. I was hoping it would fill me up so I wouldn't be snacking and it actually worked.

This time I actually got my hair cut short even though it is -26 out there! In a day or two, I will like it better than right now but...I needed the change! I feel 'lighter' and that's a good thing!

It has beenn drizzling snow all day without a lot of accumulation but low cloud and very dreary out there. I so need the sunshine to 'do' any work!

I have a meeting tonite so need to get organized for it but wanted to keep on track with my blog. Four more sleeps till we see the kids but whose counting!

Let it Snow - naught!

I think we have had enough snow for a week or two. However, I hear we are in for more flurries in a few days. Of course we are - I have my hair appt on the north side of town on Wed. It never fails. It is always poor weather as I try to manouver the Yellowhead - the death wish highway!

Anyway, John got the driveway, sidewalks and neighbors' driveways cleared away today with the snowblower. Thankfully it did not snow. The largest snowfall in a very long time - I forget the exact statistics but awhile anyway.

I did very good at getting out of our cul de sac and to my workplace, only to get stuck in their parking lot which was not yet cleared.  Someone pushed me into the lot and someone pushed me out of the lot tonite when I left. Stuck both times! I was so glad there were still a few people left to push!

Prayer Works

It was a great church service today. The focus is on prayer - both in our small groups and from the pulpit. Also, the week of Jan 23 it is our Faith Enrichment Days with emphasis on...you guessed it...PRAYER.  They are calling it 'Prayer Works'.

I think it can be taken two ways. (1) Prayer Works! - meaning just that - prayer does work. Why not try it if you haven't already! And if you haven't, here are some great ways to find out how easy and productive and fulfilling it can be.

The 2nd way is 'Prayer Works' meaning different prayer venues or ways to pray and how to pray.

Now, this may not be what the church had intended with this title at all but is simply my reaction to the wording because I do love words.  But, this morning's sermon stuck with me in that Pastor Phil (the Young Adults Pastor) suggested:  "Have you ever tried to pray differently than you normally do to add some new perspective into your prayer life?"

Wow, 'differently'? What did he mean by that? So he proceeded to tell us. Example...
(1) Pray HONESTLY. Whoa! Was he suggesting that we might lie when we pray? No. But I guess we sometimes aren't honest with ourself when we pray. Jeremiah 20:7 "O Lord, you deceived me, and I was deceived."  "Jerry" is angry with God and tells him so in his prayer. Can God take it? You bet! He's God! But the idea is that he is open and truthful and sharing how he is feeling with God (who, by the way, already knows anyway)!

(2) Pray CREATIVELY - Now you're talking. I wanted to hear more about this one! Psalm 33:1 Sing joyfully to the Lord...praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.

So, make music, make up songs, even dance in front of the Lord. Be creative. I think that also means, word pictures, letters, song.  Do what you do best or most comfortably to make your encounters with him meaningful and delightful and exciting and enjoyable. Thus my blog!

(3) Pray about EVERYTHING - Nehemiah 2:4 What is it you want? Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered..." and Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  Nothing is too small to God about your life. Nothing is insignificant to God.

(4) Pray NON-STOP - 1 Samuel 1 Hanna who was barren prayed continually for a child and God granted her prayer. Pray without ceasing.

Now, take swimming for example. When you don't know how to swim, nothing seems to keep you afloat. But...once you learn how...it seems like you can never sink. Same thing with prayer.

So, not the method so much, but 'how you best connect with God. What works? what doesn't? What's most natural for you. Find the best fit and then... just... do... it.!

Amen.

Good Neighbors

It is still snowing in Edmonton. I went out yesterday afternoon and shovelled and shovelled and shovelled. The neighbor to our north came over after I went into the house and used his snow blower to blow all my piles into the back yard! yippeeee!  John did not have to do a thing except come inside! He had a full day on the blizzardy roads yesterday and was thankful just to come in and relax. Well....that would have been hard as seven lady friends of mine were at our place last night for a little get-together! He heard giggling and laughing all evening! He said he went to sleep though so that was good.

Still dark at 7:35 a.m. after John drove out
He had to work again today and left the house at 7:30. It had been snowing all night so I am sure he was fretting when he had to back out of the garage over all that snow. It was now packed into tire rows! I said I would go out this morning and shovel again and he could use the snow blower when he got home this afternoon to get rid of the piles. Again....another good neighbor to the south of us came this morning BEFORE I got outside and used his snowblower to do the driveway, sidewalks, etc. It looks great!  thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

9:30 am - This is a video but won't upload - at least the pic is here to show the work!

I know that John does the walks for people in our cul de sac and often the driveways too. I know those who receive his handiwork are thankful but to be on the receiving end of that gesture feels really good. I know why they appreciate it so much. He just thinks he is getting his exercise (which he is) but it is more than that! He's being a good neighbor too!

It's still snowing and there's more snow on the way. Welcome to winter in Edmonton!

Not So Clear

Here's an interesting or possibly uninteresting piece of information. While watching tv on regular cable I can hear the actors speak very clearly. When I flip to an HD station (watching the same show) the sound drops considerably and I have to turn it up from what was 14 to 60 or more (depending on the show). Why is that? It allows me to flip back and forth between regular and HD but I have to always remember to turn the sound down first if I am headed back to regular or it will be blaring loud!!! Technology!!  I admit I love watching the HD programs as it is clearer than 'real life'. Now that's a conundrum! Clearer than real life? Would that not be unreal real life? Oh dear..better just go do some housework in my not-so-clear real life world!

Gentle Giant

I went to the funeral for our friend Brad Bonkowski last night and a celebration broke out. The church was full. Obviously, he had impacted a lot more people than just me!  You know the hockey expression "I went to the fights and a game broke out" (as opposed to "I went to the game and a fight broke out")...you know what I mean? Anyway, I went to a funeral and the Hallelujah chorus broke out in my heart! What a tribute to a special man. As his close friend Ross shared, "he was exactly what you saw".

Brad loved to sing and he had a wonderful deep voice. He was in the choir for as long as I can remember. He stood out in a crowd not only because of his height but for his voice as well! It was amazing to see the full choir in attendance and for them to sing some of his favourite songs as a tribute to this man. 'Amazing Grace' never sounded as sweet or more true.

Brad was a 'gentle giant' of a man. He was soft and quiet in nature but fun loving and very friendly. He loved to sing. He loved God. He shared his faith through his love for people. He didn't 'push' his faith on you but you felt it, nevertheless. You knew what he believed and he left a sprinkle on you whether you where aware of it or not! It's refreshing to know someone like that! He will be missed by all who knew him and it is a loss for those of you who did not. May his wife Joanne be comforted in part by the knowledge of how much he was loved and respected by others. Our prayers for comfort and strength go out to her.  Brad is now 'safe and secure' with his God.

"...Our life here on earth is short but our eternity is forever. I'm not in a rush to get to heaven but I'm certainly looking forward to it. I just know I'm going to be a member of God's choir and I'm going to be able to hug my grandparents and other loved ones again. What a privilege to be a child of God ..."

Change Is as Good as a Rest

I have been playing around with my templates again. Can't seem to really get what I want. I will keep trying but as my title indicates 'a change is as good as a rest'.

I worked Mon and Tues and last night we had our life team start up again so it has been busy. I have also taken a break from blogging - obviously not a long one - but a day or two. It's good to rest once in a while.

Tonite we are headed to a friend's funeral. Hard to believe he is really 'gone'. He was so young. Only 52. When you don't know a person and they die there is truly not as much thought given to it. Maybe 'oh, he was young,' or 'that's too bad,' or 'it will be hard for his family'. But.. when you know them - it's more like ... 'where exactly is he right now?', 'Is he able to see us?',  'Is there really an afterlife?' etc, etc, etc It is definitely more a questioning of one's self and one's beliefs.

I do believe...I trust in God...I believe in eternity....I know Jesus is my personal savior...I know what He did for me (a sinner)...I have asked Him to lead me...but death is so surreal (bizarre, unreal) when you know the person. It takes on a different meaning or understanding.

My heart goes out to his wife. She will be the one we now concern ourselves about. She will need the support and encouragement of her family and friends. It will take time and courage.

On a totally different and hum drum note...it snowed again last night so there was more shovelling to do. Life goes on amidst the happiness or unhappiness of ourselves or others.

Yet, in and through it all, we remain...joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer, Romans 12:12.

Birthday Girl

It was my friend's 71st birthday today. We went out for supper to the Sawmill with her family. We've not been there for a number of years - it may even have been with them years ago! Where does the time go?  Anyway, she was a happy girl. She may not have been sure what our names were but she was still happy to be the center of attention. For a few moments, it was just like ol' times!

2011

Well, the 2nd day into 2011 and I am now making my New Years Resolution. Cut out the sweets, the extra servings and please, please, please, help me to just eat three good square meals a day without the nibblings inbetween! It might help if I knew I was going away in two months to the beach and will need to show skin but, alas, we are not. So...that means I might need to be more strict with myself. However, whatever the outcome, my good intention is there. Let's see what I can do with it!

This morning it was snowing again. I was up at 6:45 a..m. to get ready for church and hubby was already outside shovelling ours and the neighbors' sidewalks. He is so good that way. The weather report says flurries on and off for the next 4-5 days. Bet that will change daily!

Christmas lights still on and colourful.

The guy who does all the hard work around here!

We are off to a birthday party for a friend of ours. She will be 71. Hard to believe the time has gone by so quickly. I saw her Thurs and she was doing well. It will be a surprise for her tonite. I usually visit her on Sunday afternoons so she will be wondering where I am (or not). She has Alzheimer's. It will be good to catch up on what's happening in her two son's lives. We have not seen them for a number of months. Life is totally different for them now without their mother 'with them' mentally. She is doing well though.

Back to work tomorrow! I am actually looking forward to it. I need to get back into some sort of routine. Our Life Team starts up on Tues nite so it will be good to see the 13 people who attend. We missed seeing most of them over Christmas. Everyone goes 'every which way' with family things.

So, the routine of life begins again. Strange how it feels like deja vu (all over again)!!
