I had an interesting experience today. Dave Lumley walked into the office to meet with one of the employees here. You know what it's like when you see someone (you think you know) but can't place the 'where' and the 'when' to them? I couldn't even conjure up a name. After he walked out to his car to get something, I asked who he was. Before he came back into the office, she told me it was Dave Lumley. Of course, after hearing the name and then seeing the face, it was obvious. Now, Dave played for the Oilers about 30 years ago. That makes me feel pretty old - I'm not sure how that makes him feel! One of the young men in our office had no clue who he was - not a big hockey fan - but he knows some of the current players.
Anyway, my main point of telling this was simply to say that when he was introduced to me, when he came back into the office, I asked if I could see his ring. I only meant for him to 'show me his hand extended' but he in fact he removed the ring and gave it to me to hold. A big diamond on it with 84/85 engraved with the Oilers logo. Very nice. I would think it would be nice to have something like that, a symbol of success, acknowledgement of hard work while accomplishing something pretty spectacular. Well...I think so.
It reminded me of when I was in Grade 7 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan! I was in our school's Field Day and won a bronze medal. Not a red ribbon or a blue ribbon. But a medal. It didn't even have my name on it but I thought it was pretty cool. It was even better than a red ribbon!! I forget now what I got it for - likely broad jump - but the feeling I remember well. I felt pretty important. Now, that was just for a little effort - can you imagine what it would feel like to be getting a Stanley Cup ring?!!! Wowzers!!! And what about some of those guys who got a ring for a number of years in a row. ahhhh, those were the days.
I'm feeling nostalgic. Do you remember the song "Where have all the flowers gone?" - yes, gone to young men every one one - when will they ever learn? when will they ever learn. Now the song has a different meaning than what I am giving to it. I am just referring to how quickly time passes us by. I more aptly can sing 'Where have all the years gone?"
Ok, ok, it doesn't make any sense at all, but somehow to me, it does. "Make hay when the sun shines", people!
