The price of getting old

I went to renew our out of country travel insurance at AMA today. For some strange reason, I thought I had only paid $189 last year for the two of us.  I know that I have to pay more for John since he is older than me. Goes without saying!  However, today, I too have now moved into the 'next' bracket and subsequently, my price went up also.  Not a lot but at least $45.  However, John also moved into the next bracket as of his birthday a few weeks ago, and his jumped as well.

We had to fill out the Medical forms this time - well, he did last time too, but this was the first time for me.  However, even doing that, and marking in NO to EVERY  ONE of the questions, indicating absolutely NO health problems with either of us, STILL meant that our insurance premium was increased. Being healthy, only meant that we were still able to GET insurance.

In some ways, I almost thought we should just 'chance it' but the agent started sharing a story of one of her clients who was 80 and went to the U.S.A. thinking he was in good health (as far as he knew). He did not take out insurance (simply forgot). He took a fall while there and after a number of days in the hospital with a broken leg, they found out he also had cancer.  Well, long story short...he ended up having to sell his house here to pay for expenses there! It gets worse. His wife had died the year before and he was now alone, with no children but lots of debt. What a sad story.

So, I thankfully paid my premium and left with the consolation of good health, an inexpensive premium and hopefully great coverage ..in case of accident or illness!!!
